However, AI is still mostly unknown, and figuring out exactly how it will work in the design world is pretty much like trying to figure out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.<\/p><p><strong>AI<\/strong>\u00a0(artificial intelligence) has become an over-hyped buzzword across many industries and the design world is no exception. There are ongoing conversations between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/freelance\">designers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/developers\/all\">developers<\/a>\u00a0around the future impact of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.google\/\">AI<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_learning\">Machine Learning<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/machinelearningmastery.com\/what-is-deep-learning\/\">Deep Learning<\/a>\u2026\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/ui\/augmented-reality-vs-virtual-reality-vs-mixed-reality\">VR, AR, and MR<\/a>\u00a0(virtual, augmented, and mixed realities), and how our jobs may be changing.<\/p><p>So, what does design bring to the conversation? With AI, new relationships will need to be established between customer and product. These interactions will be just the beginning of the ongoing conversation between business and consumer about what artificial intelligence can, and should be able to do for products and services. \/><\/picture><\/figure><\/div><h2 id=\"rising-above-the-hype\">Rising Above the Hype<\/h2><p>AI holds a lot of potential for the design world, but for this to happen the hype around it needs to be deconstructed. It would better if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/digital\">designers<\/a>\u00a0cleared their minds and didn\u2019t think about AI as \u201cartificial intelligence\u201d\u2013as though AI was going to work as some kind of magic-tech. A more useful way to think about AI\u2014at least for the short-term\u2014is \u201c<strong>augmented intelligence.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Robots are not replacing designers.<\/strong>\u00a0IBM CEO Ginni Rometty\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2017-09-20\/ginni-rometty-on-artificial-intelligence\">recently expressed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cIf I considered the initials\u00a0<strong>AI<\/strong>, I would have preferred augmented intelligence.\u201d<\/p><p>AI is going to be mostly about optimization and speed. Designers working with AI can create designs faster and more cheaply due to the increased\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/ui\/pragmatic-pixel-perfect-design\">speed and efficiency<\/a>\u00a0it offers. The power of AI will lie in the speed in which it can analyze vast amounts of data and suggest design adjustments. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/freelance\">designer<\/a>\u00a0can then cherry-pick and approve adjustments based on that data. The most effective designs to test can be created expediently, and multiple prototype versions can be A\/B tested with users.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><div class=\"X3Bg-O9c _1xIzGpI7\" The AI algorithm pulled from a database of dozens of patterns and colors to create seven million different versions of Nutella\u2019s graphic identity, all of them unique, which have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sHYakhyvJps\">splashed across the front of jars in Italy<\/a>. All seven million jars were sold out in a month.<\/p><p>Looking into the complex, challenging worlds of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/product-design\/vr-ar-mr-the-future-of-design\">VR, AR, and MR<\/a>, which all demand a great deal of design work, AI could help designers build 3D VR worlds much more quickly. Once a basic design is established and a few parameters provided, a smart AI system could generate a selection of design alternatives to present to the designer, who would then choose the best design according to his\/ her preference.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/freelance\">Designers<\/a>\u00a0need not worry. AI and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/robotics\/programming-a-robot-an-introductory-tutorial\">robots<\/a>\u00a0will not replace us\u2014at least not in the short term. Instead of being a threat, augmented intelligence will present a series of exciting opportunities. Leveraging those design opportunities is not going to happen by magic, but by designers\u00a0<strong>co-creating<\/strong>\u00a0with AI as our creativity sits in the crosshairs of art, science, engineering, and design. Technology in the past made us stronger and faster. AI will make us smarter.
